4 This Committee considers it desirable for the arrangements to continue, at all events until it shall have had further opportunity of judging its utility. The Holloway Committee say:— In reply to your last question (3), my Committee came to the following decision:— The Holloway Committee think it desirable to continue to co-operate with the Almoners of the Hospitals, but wish to reserve to themselves the right to take immediate independent action should distress be acute. The Newington Committee send the following reply to the queries:— The results of two Friendly Visits were certainly satisfactory: (1) The man was persuaded to go to the hospital, where before he had been too nervous to go. He is now under treatment, and likely to be cured and able to work again. (2) A father was seen and asked to see that his child, who was delicate, did no hard work. He has been very careful of her since. The results in six partial enquiries were satisfactory as showing the need of enquiry; only in the first were the statements given found to be correct. (1) Statement verified. Went on attending the hospital. (2) Gave wrong addresses of home and employer, and did not come again. (3) Refused his foreman's name, and did not return after enquiries were made. (4) Would not answer re income, and did not return after enquiries were made. (5) Understated wages ; man in too good position for wife to have free treatment. Treatment was refused when she applied for it. (6) Statements incorrect, and help not needed. We think it certainly desirable to continue co-operating with the hospital Almoners in the face of above facts. The Battersea Committee state with regard to friendly visiting: Friendly visits, eleven cases.
