(c) Consultant Gynaecologists. Arrangements have been made with eight consultant Gynaecologists. Any Medical Practitioner has now the advantage of obtaining expert advice in obscure cases of Puerperal Fever or Puerperal Pyrexia. Midwifery Services. The quality of the midwifery practice in the County has been much improved by the Midwives Acts 1902, 1918, and 1926, which are having the effect of gradually substituting a service of trained women for the untrained handywoman of former times. At the end of 1926, the respective percentages were 79% Trained and 21% untrained. Of the 580 midwives practising in the County area in 1926, 180 were employed by Nursing Associations and 400 were practising independently. The cases of confinement attended by these midwives during 1926 were as follows:- As midwives 15,341, and Maternity Nurses 3,234. The Midwives and Maternity Homes Act, 1926, which came into operation on the 1st January, 1927, requires the registration by the County Council, of all premises intended to be used for the reception of maternity patients. Forty-five Maternity Homes have been registered.
