WEST RIDING COUNTY SCHEME FOR THE TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS. The West Riding scheme for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis comprises free advice and treatment at out-patient clinics up and down the county, and free treatment in sanatoria and hospitals controlled by the County Council or in beds belonging to outside authorities. This scheme, like a great many others in the country, owed its inception and development to the findings of the Royal Commission on Tuberculosis and to the subsequent passing of the National Insurance Act 1911. For clinic purposes the county is divided into eleven areas, each area having a separate dispensary with its branches under the control of a District Tuberculosis Officer and Nurses. In certain appropriate cases facilities are given for the free examination by x-ray for diagnostic purposes, and arrangements are made for the ultra-violet treatment of the disease (especially the non-pulmonary forms) where the conditions allow. An After-Care scheme is in operation in a number of areas, and good work is being done by voluntary workers on these Committees.
