Telephone No.: FLAXMAN 6446. 31st March, 1938 THE GENERAL COUNCIL TRADES UNION CONGRESS, Dear Sir, It is now 14 years since any general appeal has been made by the Chelsea Hospital for Women. During this period the advance in Medical Science and in Hospital practice has been continuous. If this Hospital, pre-eminent among those which treat exclusively the diseases peculiar to Women, is to keep fully abreast of these developments, considerable capital expenditure must be incurred. The Council of the Hospital are appealing, therefore for a sum of £30,000 to enable them to carry out the following much needed additions and improvements :- 1. Increased bed space and greater nursing facilities for all Patients. 2. Single bedrooms for Private Patients of limited means. 3. Sun Ward on South Balcony to house Chronic or Semi-Convalescent cases. 4. A substantial addition to the Nurses Home, which apart from its immediate purpose should ultimately allow for the reduction of the working hours of the Nursing Staff. We must realise that more Nurses are required owing to shorter hours, and the pressure of work. 5. The replacement of old and worn-out Boiler Plant, with an efficient and up-to-date system much more economical in running costs. 6. The modernisation of the Ward Sanitary Blocks and Equipment. 7. The extension and improvement of the Kitchen premises. The management of the Hospital has for many years past been carried out on sound and economical lines.
