description 1939-05 1939 1930s 50 pages : illustrations HINTS FOR THE BUSY HOUSEWIFE Blue if white. Wring carefully and starch while wet. Dry quickly, drawing gently into shape. Do not stretch the corners. Washable Gloves. — Gloves should be washed on the hands in lukewarm lather made by soap flakes or powder or soapless washing powder especially prepared for the purpose. Rinse quickly, squeeze in a towel, stretch to size and dry slowly. Pull frequently to prevent them drying hard. [photograph] A modern electric drying cupboard. To Make Soap Jelly. — Shred some pieces of dry soap in a saucepan and cover with water ¼lb. to 1 pint). Stand by the side of the fire and leave to simmer until clear. Stir from time to time. Turn into a jam-jar and leave to cool. Keep covered and free from dust. A little of this jelly put into warm water and beaten with the hand makes a splendid lather for washing any articles.
