And they are holding out. For two years they have kept the enemy at bay, and they will hold out until victory is theirs in the end. They will never be vanquished, for liberty and the future of the human race cannot be vanquished. And in this struggle, the U.G.T. is to be found in the thick of the fighting, in the hardest and most difficult battles. It was the U.G.T. which gave the impetus at the first moment when the Spanish democratic republic was in danger of being overthrown by the surprise attack of the traitorous generals. Also the U.G.T. has contributed very largely to the patient and persevering organisation of resistance and to the final victory. The U.G.T. believes with a passion and fervour, which has never wavered for a moment and is the surest guarantee of victory, in the struggle and the cause of republican and democratic Spain. At this hour of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the U.G.T., our homage must be made to the first pioneers in the year 1888, to the wonderful results of 50 years of T.U. work, and to the courageous fighters of today, who for two years have defended the 292/946/1/184(iii)
