I hare your letter of 10th October on the above subject. In the extract from Hansard which I sent with my last letter, you will notice the reference to there being no British nationals involved. It is not possible in these circumstances to compare, as you do, this matter with the action being taken in regard to the Dieppe prisoners, in connection with whom our Government has a definite standing and responsibility. This would appear to be a basic consideration. The German Government and even the Spanish Government would have far more influence with the Vichy Government, particularly on this matter, than would our own. As you know our Government has no direct diplomatic or even consular relations with Vichy, and generally, after the campaigns in Syria and Madagascar the atmosphere for which any representations could be made has deteriorated in the past 12 months.
