description 1936-09-04 COPY. Foreign Office, S.W.1. 4th September, 1936. Dear Major Attlee, Last week, I think during your absence, I had a visit from Mr. Arthur Greenwood, Sir W. Citrine and Mr. Middleton, representing the Labour Party, on the question of the situation in Spain. They raised in particular the question of a press report in which it was alleged that British as well as German ships were carrying cargoes of arms to Portugal for an ultimate destination in Spain. I have made careful enquiries on this point and find only one instance of an alleged case which has been brought to our notice. We made further enquiries with regard to the vessel in question and it appears that it belongs to a respectable British shipping-company and is at present in Australia waiting to load a cargo there. So far, therefore, as I am able to ascertain, there is no truth in the story at all. I thought that perhaps you would like to have this information. Yours sincerely, (signed) CRANBOURNE. The Right Honourable C.R. Attlee, M.P. 292/946/10/100
