description 010-0148-001 53, Rue de Rennes, Parit VIe. 8th August 1936. Dear Friend, The events in Spain are heavy with tragedy. Officers of the army, in violation of their oath of loyalty to the Republic, are seeking to overthrow a Government lawfully established by free and democratic election. To impose their dictatorship, the rebels are drenching the country with blood. With magnificent heroism the whole Spanish people has risen and firmly raises aloft the banner of liberty. The bloody and criminal rebellion of the army officers menaces the very existence of the Spanish people, the future of democratic states and the peace of the world. Confronted by these serious facts and the threat of even more terrible dangers, democratic public opinion cannot but react strongly. For our part we consider it extremely urgent that friends of peace and democracy in various countries should meet to consider effective means to defend democracy and to ensure that humanity shall be spared a murderous war. The undersigned persons therefore address themselves to you in the hope that you will find it possible to attend a European Conference to which leading persons from various countries are being invited. This Conference will be held in PARIS on: THURSDAY, AUGUST 13 at 2.30 p.m. at the HOTEL LUTETIA, 43 BOULEVARD RASPAIL Messrs. Jean Richard Bloch, Jean Cassou and Conrad Ulrich, who have just returned from Spain, together with leading Spanish personalities who are coming especially to attend this Conference, will report on the situation in Spain and the international problems to which it gives rise. We hope that you will express your interest in the safeguarding of peace by participation in this Conference and shall be greatly obliged if you will send your reply to M. Jean Cassou at the above address. Yours truly, Leon ARCHAMBAUD (Deputy, Vice-President of Radical Parliamentary Group.) Prof. Victor BASCH (President of the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme and President of the Rassemblement Populaire.) Jean Richard BLOCH (Author, Secretary International Writers' Association) George BRANTING (Swedish Senator) Jean CASSOU (Author) Lucien de FOYER (President of the National Peace Council of France.) Prof. Paul LANGEVIN (President of the World Committee Against War and Fascism.) Andre MALRAUX (Author) Andre MORIZET (Senator, President Socialist Parliamentary Group.) JAMMY-SCHMITT (Deputy, Ex-minister.) Jean ZYROMSKI (Executive member Labour and Socialist International.) W. SCHEVENELS (Secretary I.F.T.U.) Leon JOUHAUX (Secretary of the French General Confederation of Labour. 292/946/10/161
