- 3 - Underground munition dumps have been established in PAMPLONA and its suburbs. Shipments of munitions are being sent monthly from BILBAO to HAMBURG. These munitions are manufactured at the Basque factories of BILBAO and shipped at the docks of the Naval Ship-building works, "La Constructora Naval". Large quantities of material, nearly all German, have arrived. This is distributed amongst various villages on the coast, Santona amongst them. Fortification and Mines Activity along the French frontier is being increased. The plan of fortifications in this zone comprises the region from JACA to the Bay of Biscay; those in charge of the work are the "First Fortification Regiment", consisting of three battalions of 12 companies each, with barracks at PAMPLONA. The first unit is already in JACA, and is believed to be cleaning the CANFRANC tunnel, on the frontier between HUESCA and FRANCE. In February last, 5,000 iron stakes for barbed wire entanglements, manufactured after the German pattern, were sent to PAMPLONA (NAVARRA) from the Basque foundry at BILBAO, "Altos Hornos de Vizcaya". Three trucks per day, loaded with barbed wire rolls - produced by the Wire Company of CADAGUA, in ALONSOTEGUI, (VISCAYA) - were received at PAMPLONA during the month of February. The German mines used in the ports of GALICIA are of the "MILKER" type; they weigh 1,000 kilos, including the carriage, and each carries 200 kilos of trilite. A store of 1,000 mines of various sizes has been accumulated at RIOS (near VIGO). For minelaying and sweeping, the Germans are using six Basque fishing trawlers, including the ships, "Maite" and "Euzkera" and others from BERMEO. On the 21st April the Naval Commander, Don Manuel Calderón, returned to the French-Basque Country. He made attempts in CAPBRETON, BAYONNE and SAN JEAN DE LUZ to obtain the repatriation of the Basque sailors. This
