Freedom Peace Honour International Brigade Association 115 SHAFTESBURY AVENUE, LONDON, W.C.2 Sir Walter Citrine, Transport House, Smith Square, S.W.1 March 19th, 1940 Dear Sir Walter Citrine, Thankyou for your letter of yesterday, concerning Gunnar Ebb. I am afraid that there are parts of it which I cannot consider relevant to the imprisonment of Ebb. The fact that he was in gaol made it impossible for him to fight on either side. The fact still remains that he is in prison, and, to the best of our belief, for having fought in Spain. Even if he had a previous charge against him or against any of his family, the fact that he had offered his life for democracy should have at least assured for him the chance of liberty in any country that considers itself free and democratic. If Finland has lately been fighting for freedom, one would have thought that a man who had proved his worth in a similar fight, as a leader of his own people, as Ebb had done, would have been selected again as a leader. However this may be, what excuse can be found for the savage sentence passed upon him? Will you let us know what steps you take to secure Ebb's release, so that we can co-ordinate our efforts with yours? Yours faithfully, Alan W. Gilchrist Secretary.
