Description
Summary:013-0120-001 International. WMC/WJB/DT/422. 3rd January, 1940. The Rt. Hon. Viscount Halifax, K.G., G.C.B.I., G.C.I.E., Foreign Office, Downing Street, LONDON. S.W.1. Dear Lord Halifax, SPANISH TRADE UNION LEADER. In September last we took the liberty of approaching you with regard to the case of a trade union leader who was in grave danger of being sentenced to death. You were good enough to take the matter up and comnunicate with your Ambassador in Spain, and I should like once again to express my grateful thanks to you for your good offices. Recently I have again been receiving urgent messages about similar cases, and they are of such a character that I could not resist once more appealing to you. This time it concerns a trade union leader of the name of RICARDO ZABALZA He was General Secretary of the Agricultural Workers' Union, a member of the former Spanish T.U.C., a member of the Cortes and the Civil Governor of Valencia. There cannot possibly be any Justification for him being condemned to death, as I have just heard he has been.. In addition to this case, reports are to hand of daily ruthless acts of barbarity against trade union leaders and social democrats. I most earnestly request you to consider with your colleagues whether the influence of the British Government could not be used in order to bring about a cessation of the policy of repression and cruelty which is how being pursued in Spain. Yours faithfully, General Secretary. 292/946/13/120
