Sir Walter Citrine Dear Comrade, The comrades of the Spanish Land Workers' Union, now living in Oran, French North Africa, inform me that Ricardo Zabalza,the general secretary of that Union, who could not leave Spain, has been sentenced to death in Madrid, and we are afraid that the sentence will be executed unless some strong pressure from abroad is brought on Franco's headsmen. Zabalza is one of the most brilliant and successfull young leaders of our Union General de Trabajadores and to him is in great part due the enormous increment gained during the last years by the Land Workers' Union in Spain. His death would be a tremendous loss to the future Labour Movement in Spain. As a delegate here of the Spanish land workers now in exile I beg fervently for your help in favour of Ricardo Zabalza. His only crime is to be a labour leader. I think a hint from the British Ambassador in Madrid to Francos Government could save still Zabalza. But the step is most urgent. I understand,of course, the heavy wories that the war has thrown on your shoulders, but to save a life like that of Zabalza is a part too of the Allies' cause, the victory of which all Spanish workers wish with their full heart.
