Your reference HVT/FC/EK.314 11th December, 1937. Mr. H. V. Tewson, Assistant Secretary, The Trades Union Congress General Council, Transport House, Smith Square, LONDON S.W.1. Dear Sir, We confirm telephonic communication with your office this morning to the effect that, owing to rain, we are unable to send forward the 140 tons of Sugar for shipment per the s.s. HARTBRIDGE from Newcastle. Furthermore, the Mid-Atlantic shipping Company inform us this morning that there is a possibility of this steamer not sailing, as, owing to the Blockade declared by General Franco, the owners maintain that the declaration renders the range of ports mentioned in the "danger area." We have, however, asked the Mid-Atlantic Shipping Company to let us know of another opportunity as soon as ever possible, and would also mention that they have pointed out their present intention to sail vessels to Barcelona, but there is a possibility that at a later date, either before or after sailing, their principals may decide to divert the vessels to other ports in Government Spain, and they have asked us to acknowledge this point to them. We will keep you informed as to the progress of events, and doubtless you, on your part, will use every endeavour to enable us to effect shipment of the consignments on hand. Your faithfully, E. Winstanley Export Department. 292/946/29/81
