Description
Summary:1929-10 1929 1920s 2 pages Arthur Corbett-Smith is the son of Colonel Sir William R. Smith, M.D., the eminent pioneer in Public Health work, founder and Principal of the Royal Institute of Public Health, late a Sheriff of the City of London; and of Eleanor (née Pascoe) of the ancient Cornish family. He was educated at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford, of which University he is a Master of Arts. He is a Barrister-at-Law, of the Inner and Middle Temples; Officier de l'Instruction Publique (decorated by the French Government for Public Health Services; a Freeman, and for War services an Honorary Freeman, of the City of London; and holds the rank of Major in the Royal Horse and Field Artillery, retired, 1929, after 34 years varied service by sea, land and air. His life work has been the enlightenment and inspiration of the People in all matters "of good report." In Public Health, Mr. Corbett-Smith's most important work lay with the Venereal Diseases. After publishing the results of a world-wide investigation into facts and figures he initiated, in 1913, a national campaign of enlightenment at a time when ignorance upon the subject was profound, especially within the medical profession, and all mention of the subject was taboo. For a brief synopsis of Mr. Corbett-Smith's career, and list of works in some twelve departments, reference is invited to the current Who's Who. Mr. Corbett-Smith's position generally as National Publicist is suggested by the following tribute (quoted by permission) from Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, R.N., O.M., in a presentation copy of his book, The Grand Fleet :— "To Major A. Corbett-Smith, in gratitude for and appreciation of his great services in bringing to the notice of the British People the working of Britain's Sea Power, these few lines are inscribed by the author," Jellicoe, A.F. 11/8/20. or by an editorial note in The Teachers World (6/2/29) apropos of the English Folk campaign:— "The Author's brilliant record of work on behalf of his country — especially during the Great War — places him in a unique position as an observer and analyst of England and what she stands for in the world." or from the late Lord Leverhulme :— "A great worker, an ardent patriot and a man of sheer genius." 200/B/3/2/C693/3/13
