Description
Summary:Topical reviews of Polish samizdat publications in English prepared by RFE staff members to be used by different national broadcasting units. PIPR was published from 1986 until November 1989 as a continuation of Polish Underground Extracts (PUE). Soviets Blamed for Polish Plane Crash / by Jacek KalabińskiTwo Polish underground papers attribute the crash of a LOT Polish Airlines jet on May 9, 1987 which killed all 183 people on board, to the Soviet manufacturer of the Ilyushin 62M plane. Soviet Dissidents Write to a Polish Opposition Group / by Anna PomianThe underground biweekly "Solidarność Walcząca" publishes a Polish translation of a letter from a Soviet "Group of Sympathizers of Fighting Solidarity", prepared in Leningrad in April 1987 and addressed to "all those who oppose communism in Poland" and written on behalf of "their Soviet supporters." The letter claims that Gorbachev's reforms are only cosmetic changes to the totalitarian system, which can nevertheless have a eroding effect on the party's authority, a trend which the example of Solidarity has been reinforcing. It concludes with an appeal for unity between Poles and Soviets. An Independent Columnist on the Pope's Visit to Poland / by Nika KrzeczunowiczThis is the full text of a commentary on the Pope's forthcoming visit to Poland by an author signing himself Jan Szymanowski. It was printed in the Warsaw weekly, Wola. Arts Festival Opens in Wrocław / by Anna PomianIndependent festivals of the arts and literature have become a regular feature of Poland's cultural life; organized under the aegis of the pastoral communities in the larger cities, they provide an alternative meeting point for artists and intellectuals to those organized under state patronage. One such festival for young people recently opened in Wrocław. The State of Solidarity's Archives / by Anna PomianSeveral volumes in a series of archives documenting the history of Solidarity have reached the West; they are part of an ambitious venture that has already produced some 20 titles of hitherto unpublished material. The series is aimed at historians, journalists, and sociologists. Solidarity "Postage Stamps" Honor RFE's Polish Service / by Anna PomianThe Solidarity underground post issues a set of stamps commemorating the 35th anniversary of the first broadcast to Poland, on 3 May 1952, of Radio Free Europe's Polish Broadcasting Service.
