The TUC delegation visited Russia, Ukraine the Caucasus and other areas of the Soviet Union between November-December 1924. The delegation met a variety of workers' organisations and, among other activities, interviewed political prisoners, laid a wreath on Lenin's tomb and attended the 6th Congress of All-Russian Trade Unions in the former "Nobles Club" shown here.
Seated here at left of table (l-r) Herbert Smith, Alan A.H. Findlay, A.A. Purcell, Ben Tillett and (standing) Fred Bramley (TUC General Secretary). The other TUC delegates were John Turner and John Bromley.
The delegation were overwhelmed by the warmth of their reception which included a demonstration of over 100,000 workers, a parade by the Red Army, and their train be stopped at several small towns by local welcoming committees. |
