Despite paying their textile workers low wages of 7-9 shillings (35-45p) per week for 60 hours work, R. Ainsworth & Sons, Cleator Mills, Cleator (near Whitehaven, Cumbria) were awarded valuable War Office contracts to make Khaki and other thread for uniforms. Mary Macarthur's husband, the MP W.C. Anderson, called for an investigation into conditions in the Mills. 250 women, who were members of the National Federation of Women Workers, and 20 boys came out on strike and after 6 weeks, the company conceded their demands for a 10% War Bonus. Full recognition of the union was also obtained. |
