Extract from Report 28, dated 21 July 1916, issued by the No Conscription Fellowship (NCF) showing the diary of an imprisoned conscientious objector during the First World War.
The weekly reports include details of C.O.s recently arrested and the outcomes of court martials and other hearings. By the end of the war the NCF had recorded 6312 C.O.s arrested and handed over to the military authorities, of whom 5970 were court-martialled. 816 served over two years in prison.
The NCF was launched in November 1914, with Clifford Allen as chairman and A. Fenner Brockway as secretary, and campaigned vigorously against the Military Service Acts and to support its members through their hearings and imprisonment. The NCF ceased operations in November 1919 after all the C.O.s had been released. |
