"News International dispute, 1986" [BW0090], 1986, Trades Union Congress
In January 1986, the News International Group owned by Rupert Murdoch, sacked 5,500 workers for refusing to sign new working arrangements which included moving his printing works from Fleet Street to Wapping in East London. The print unions called for a boycott of 'The Sun', 'News of the World', 'The Times' and the 'Sunday Times'. The dispute went on for over a year and there were several violent confrontations with police on the picket line. The unions finally withdrew from the dispute in February 1987. This photograph shows a steward burning a writ on the picket line. |
