Interview with John Monks, part of the TUC Millennium Film Project
John Monks (1945- ) worked for the Plessey Company, joining the TUC in 1969 as an assistant in the Organisation and Industrial Relations Department, becoming its head of department in 1977. He became TUC Deputy General Secretary in 1987 and General Secretary in 1993. From 2003-2011, he was General Secretary on the European Trade Union Confederation. In 2010, he was made a life peer as Baron Monks, of Blackley in the County of Greater Manchester.
