Summary:1983 1980-95 "Black Trade Unionists Solidarity Movement conference, 1983" [BW0012], 1983, Trades Union Congress The Black Trade Unionists' Solidarity Movement was set up by Bernie Grant MP and others in December 1981. Another member was Gloria Mills, who became a senior official in Unison and the first black woman president of the TUC in 2006. The BTUSM held its first conference in 1983 at County Hall in London and agreed to act as a pressure group within the trade union movement. In order to gain political support, changes within the Labour party were demanded and the Labour party black sections movement was founded.
