Phil graduated from his Sciences degree in 1968 at a time when work was abundant and he entered the pharmaceutical industry, initially working for Glaxo, in Ulverston, Cumbria. He remained there for 4years before taking up another post with Reckitt and Colman in Chiswick, West London. In 1975, Phils career took a completely different course when he joined the incipient government body, the Health & Safety Executive. He enjoyed a varied career, holding a senior position with this body which entailed implementing statutory legislation, until retiring two and a half years ago.
Phil was an active trade unionist all through his working life, as a member of the ASTMS and the IPMS.
