Summary:2013 "McManus, Phil", 2013, HistoryTalk Left school at 15. Did an apprenticeship in a radio and television sales shop, a small firm, as the only electrician. He trained at college in the evenings in Southall. He completed his apprenticeship at 21, and following the collapse of the business, went to work for Rolls Royce as a process chaser for two years. He describes the pay-rates, and his post being stuck between management and the shop-floor. He then helped build schools on the route to St Albans and a new housing project at Harrow Weald. He worked in Jersey for 6 years before working for Kodak. Phil was in the Kodak Union and then the T&G becoming branch secretary, then Chairman of the branch and on the national negotiating committee. He describes the pay bargaining that was at the expense of pensions and sick pay at the end of the 1970s. He talks about his politics and motivation for joining the union.
