Lesley studied English at Cambridge. She returned to secondary school teaching following the birth of her children, at Cardinal Manning, a Secondary Modern School for Boys. She describes the difficulty of maintaining discipline.
Moved on to adult education, teaching English as a foreign language to migrants in the UK. 1979 - 1989. She says students "would be very generous with what they would tell us about their culture." The working environment and practices changed., became more formal but at the same time lost some of the inclusivity and skills. Taught the homeless in a hostel. took up that counselling course of one day a week at Birkbeck, "it was a very serious course for two years and then I was interested in having contact with people who would have a chance to develop further whatever their psychological background."
In her clip she says how she feels privileged to have taught so many people. She was given an award for 25 years of teaching in the borough.
