Description
Summary:2013 "Bruton, Avril", 2013, HistoryTalk Avril Bruton worked in the field of mental health for most of her life. She was born in Ireland and after leaving school spent three years studying for a Social Science degree at UCD, Dublin. Followed this by working at St James’s Psychiatric Hospital in Dublin before moving to live in London, where she has lived since 1971. She worked as an unqualified social worker before taking a post grad in social work down in Croydon Technical College and then returned to St Charles and stayed there until 1984 managing cases, managing people with problems who were on surgical wards. She talks about her motivation and describes the work, the satisfaction of building up her medical knowledge, and the bridge between the hospital setting and home that she helped build as a social worker. She then retrained as a primary school teacher and worked in Chiswick. She describes the long hours and how stressful the work was, then returned to health care management before retiring. In her clip she describes her later working career, how she retrained because she felt worn out by being in the same job for a long time.
