Sue began her working life with Finefare, an American-owned supermarket. She then spent two years at the College of Distributive Trades studying for a Commercial Art Diploma and was employed at various places thereafter, working on exhibitions and window displays, including spells at prominent West End stores such as Libertys and Heals. Sue then left to work as a telephonist for the GPO and, upon leaving them, continued with this type of work through numerous temporary posts that she obtained through an employment agency.(Sue would also work for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea as a telephonist at a later stage in her career.) In the late 70s, Sue elected to re-enter education, having previously left school at 15 without any academic qualifications. Sue initially studied for a year at City Lit and then went on to take a degree at the then Polytechnic of Central London. Having graduated, Sue took up a position with a market research company called Business Decisions Ltd. She remained with them for 2 and a half years before joining the Housing Benefits section of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in 1984.
Sue has always been politically engaged and a staunch advocate of trade unions. Sue had served as a Welfare Officer in the Student Union, and also as a Publicity Officer for NALGO. Eventually, Sue was seconded as a full time Branch Secretary for UNISON, remaining in this post for 15 years.)
