Description
Summary:"The 200,000 union safety reps in Britain perform a vital role in maintaining and improving standards of health and safety in the workplace. But to do so they need to be armed with the information and facts to enable them to carry out their role to best effect. A new booklet published today by the Labour Research Department (LRD) aims to provide safety reps with the essential information they need in clear and concise form. Safety Reps in Action explains employers' legal duties as laid down under the Health and Safety At Work Act and other legislation and regulations. It describes the role and rights of safety reps and safety committees, such as rights to facilities, to time off for safety functions and training and to "stop the job" in the event of imminent danger. In addition, it provides advice on how to tackle specific health and safety problems and gives examples of "success stories", where health and safety in specific workplaces has been improved by safety reps in action. In each case the end result is always a safer and healthier workplace which is usually also a more efficient and productive one - a lesson that should not be lost on employers.
