Summary:"Work-related accidents - especially in small and medium-sized enterprises - are still one of the EU’s most pressing safety and health at work issues. The heavy load borne by workers and their families and the economic cost of work-related accidents to the European economy are a serious cause for concern. According to Eurostat, in 1996 in the EU, there were almost 4.8 million work-related accidents that resulted in more than three days absence from work, amounting to some 146 million working days lost. Fatal accidents for the same year were over 5,500. The problem is particularly acute in small and medium-sized enterprises: for example, the incidence rate for fatal accidents in enterprises with less than 50 workers is around double that of larger companies. ..."
