"Why pay more rent? (front)" [T0247.jpg], c. 1916
This leaflet was issued by the War Emergency Workers' National Committee, c.1916. There were widespread rent increases during the war, particularly in munitions industry towns where there was increased demand for rented accommodation from war workers.
In November 1915, a "No Rent" campaign was organised in Glasgow and a number of tenants received summonses for refusing to pay rent increases. Workers from several factories and shipyards on the Clyde struck and demonstrated at the Sherriff's Court against the eviction orders. Concerned by the threat to war production, the Government rushed through legislation to restrict rent increases. |
