This cartoon was printed in the Union of Post Office Workers newspaper, 'The Post', February 10, 1940 and reflects the union's anger at not being consulted over the re-introduction of the night-time one shilling telephone call. Cheap trunk [long distance] calls had been withdrawn at the beginning of the war to give priority to the defence and emergency services. The union was concerned at more women being asked to work longer hours and night shifts in poor conditions. |
