'Daily Herald' 3 May, 1926 announces the strike. On May 4, Hamilton Fyfe and William Mellor, the 'Heralds' editor and night editor, together with the general manager, Robert Williams, met with the TUC's Press and Publicity Committee to discuss producing a strike newspaper on their presses.
Just before the first issue of the 'British Worker' went to print, the 'Daily Herald' offices were raided by detectives, with mounted police holding back the large crowd which gathered to defend the building. A dozen copies of the 'British Worker' were printed for the city commissioner and the police continued to occupy the building until permission to print was received. The first issue was on the streets just before midnight on May 5.
