Summary:1974 1960-2000 "Hugh Scanlon, TUC Congress, 1974" [T0447.jpg], 1974 Hugh Scanlon (1913-2004) was born in Australia, but came to England at the age of 2 and was brought up in Stretford, Manchester. He completed his apprenticeship as an instrument maker and became a shop steward in the engineering industry. He was Divisional Organiser for the Amalgamated Engineering Union in Manchester 1947-1963. He joined the AEU Executive 1963-1967, becoming President 1968-1978. During this time, he was (along with Jack Jones) seen as one of the most influential and well-known trade union leaders. He sat on the TUC General Council 1968-1978 and was a member of several public boards including the National Economic Development Council and the Engineering Industry Training Board. He became a peer in 1979.
