Summary:2011 "Eady, Martin", 2011, HistoryTalk Martin joined London Transport in 1973 and did training at the White City Training Centre to be a carriage examiner on the underground. He worked at Ealing Common depot on the District Line. He outlines the training schedule, seniority, types of pre- war and post- war train stock and describes the atmosphere and camaraderie of depot work. He was one of new generation of young recruits. He notes the role of black workers and the racism to be found amongst some workers. Martin joined the NUR. It was closed shop with 100% union membership and he recalls branch meetings. Describes the machinery of negotiation on LT and the role of the trade unions in Sectional Councils with full- time release for union duties. He was elected Sectional Council representative and did disciplinary cases on behalf of NUR members. He was involved in many of the industrial and political campaigns of the 1970s/ 80s including Grunwicks, anti fascist and anti- racist campaigns such as the Rail Against the Nazis. He discusses the NUR's leadership and the GLC role in 1980s and Fares Fair /Fare Fight. Outlines the impact of One Person Operated of trains in the 1980s and the response of the unions and later the Action Stations Programme. He later joined the NUR National Executive in 1988. Describes the domestic pressures of being an exec member in a period of huge battles and both official and unofficial strikes and ACAS negotiations. In his clip he describes shift work patterns and the problems caused for health and family life.
