Anonymous 1 was a civil servant working from 1973 to 1997. He worked first at Queen Anne's Gate Chambers where approx 50 people worked and then at Marsham Street HQ with over 1,000 staff. There were some 500,000 civil servants mainly based in London in the seventies. He then moved to Hepburn House followed by Lambeth Bridge House. He was a clerical officer and then an administrative officer.
Anon 1 joined the CPSA (forerunner CSCA: Civil Services Clerical Association). He became a union rep and was branch treasurer, chair and secretary and worked hard to ensure women typist members were represented properly. Describes national pay bargaining and local union work. The 1, 600 members of his branch dropped to 630 in 1986 but this was due to anti- union attacks under Thatcher and GCHQ. His branch was Westminster and covered a large area from Westminster to Heathrow Airport. He describes himself as a 'left- winger' and tried to protect jobs, represent members, do health and safety and work on anti- apartheid campaigns. Was involved in strike action over health & safety and other issues and describes the process of forming picket lines. He was a member of the Broad Left and Broad Left 84 in the union and a delegate to the Cities of London & Westminster trades Council for ten years
