If your claim is not received six weeks before your expected confinement you may lose part of the allowance. 12. What happens if I do not claim at the proper time? The allowance will normally be paid only for the time between the date you claim, and the end of the sixth week after the week of your confinement. It will not be paid for any time before the date of your claim unless you can show that you had good cause, such as serious illness, for not claiming at the proper time. You must also show that you did not work during any period for which you wish to claim. 13. What happens if the baby is not born in the week expected? You will not lose any part of the allowance merely because the confinement takes place before or after the expected date. If the baby is born before expected the allowance will go on for six weeks after the week in which the birth was expected. If the baby is born prematurely and because of this you did not get a certificate of expected confinement you should ask the doctor or midwife to certify on the claim form that the birth was premature and to state the date on which the baby was expected. The allowance will then run on for six weeks after this date. If the baby is born later than expected the allowance may nevertheless continue without a break to the end of six weeks after the week in which the confinement occurs. 14. Are there any rules I must follow? Yes. While you are drawing the allowance you must do no work other than domestic duties in the home and you must take due care of your health. The notice of confinement which you will find in the order book, must be completed and sent to your local National Insurance Office within three weeks after your confinement. 6
