Description
Summary:1902-02 1902 1900s 15 pages 15 FRIENDLY VISITS OF INQUIRY. F. R.— Twelve years; came for ringworm. Boy came with an elder sister, who stated: father, tailor, working on his own account ; mother helped in shop ; sister helped in shop (came with patient) ; sister a dressmaker; sister doing heraldic work. Rent, 12s. No others dependent. I told elder sister to ask the father whether he could not go to a specialist privately, if what they wanted was special advice, as she said it was. She returned next week to say he was unable to do this. I asked for a visitor to go and talk the matter over with him. Report from visitor.— The father is a journeyman tailor, earning about £3 per week. Two daughters earning. Parents would be quite willing to see a specialist privately if the treatment was not one needing constant visits to him. Case did not return to hospital. FRIENDLY VISIT. S.C. (w.) — 50. Suffering from haemorrhoids. Stated she did mantle work, and lived with a sister who did the same. Rent, 4s. That she herself had scarcely been able to earn anything, and that both were going short of food. Friendly visitor found the case a poor one, and the sisters apparently very respectable folk. She thought the difficulty would be solved without an application to the C.O.S. if Mrs. Collett could be admitted for an operation, which she persuaded the woman to undergo. We were able to arrange to have her in at once, and she has not had to attend the hospital since. In the cases where nothing further was done after a friendly visit, the reason of this was generally either because no further help seemed advisable or because the patients themselves would not do what was advised.
