Description
Summary:1903-09-28 1903 1900s 5 pages man lost. 6. 14 days. N.S. 12. child suffering from early phthisis. F. refuses enquiry or assistance from C.O.S. who report case to I.C.A.A. The child is sent away on the parents' promise to pay 2/ a wk. Man turns out to be a postman earning 30/ a wk & uniform &c. & has only one other ch. His prejudice against the C.O.S. was founded on a refusal to help him in time of strike years ago, but he was intelligent & reasonable enough to understand the position when explained, as doubtless he would have been ready to accept the responsibility of his boy's illness if some trouble had been taken in the matter. 7. 18 mths. E.T. w. 67. Convalesced & personally helped to such responsible but not heavy work as her advanced age allowed her to do. 8 2 1/2 yrs. f.v. [H.B. 20 phthisis] W.G. 5/12. Baby suffering from insufficient nourishment. F. unskilled workman. 8 young children. A small allowance was made for a few weeks for extra milk, but an intimate acquaintance with the home soon revealed the root of the trouble as overcrowding. Only at the end of 2 1/2 years has the placing of the three eldest children well been accomplished, & the residuum of the family moved a little way out of London. Very little money has been spent, but much personal interest. Today the eldest boy writes for particulars of a good friendly society which were given him when he was unable to follow the advice to join. 9. K.L. w. 27. A clergyman asked advice as to applying for Widow's Gift for the widow of a Hosp. pt. 378/IMSW/A/1/2/44
