(A) Ante and post natal clinics (1) Municipal clinics Ante natal care should be in the hands of a doctor and the clinics should be run on the lines laid down by the Ministry of Health's memorandum 145/MCW. The mother should be encouraged to attend the clinic as early as possible in pregnancy and continuous supervision must be given her and examination from time to time as required. She should be examined six weeks after confinement. 4. Records must be kept at the clinic and these must be available for the midwife, doctor or hospital responsible for the confinement. Midwives and Doctors should be encouraged to attend the clinic with their patients. 5. The Medical Officer in charge of the clinic should be directly responsible to the Medical Officer of Health. He or she should either be a whole-time Assistant Medical Officer of Health having had special experience in midwifery or a part-time officer of a consultant standing (i.e. special hospital experience of all obstetric work, post-graduate instruction and/or specialist degrees.) 6. Health Visitors. An adequate staff of Health Visitors, directly appointed by the Local Authority must be included in any satisfactory scheme under the Act. 7. Their duties should include: (a) In relation to the expectant mother: (i) Visiting and advising attendance at the clinic as early as possible in pregnancy. N.B. Should the expectant mother have already engaged a doctor or midwife, she should be advised to ask him or her for a card of introduction to the medical officer at the clinic, before her first attendance. (ii) Revisiting expectant mothers attending the clinic, to ensure that the advice of the Medical Officer is followed. (iii) Taking whatever steps may be necessary to ensure that every expectant mother obtains all necessary ancillary services (e.g. the provision of extra nourishment, domestic help, sterilised outfit, clothes for herself and the baby, etc.)
