SCHOOL MEDICAL INSPECTION. The work of School Medical Inspection, which follows the lines laid down by the Board of Education, provides for the Routine medical inspection of school children in 3 age-groups, viz; Entrants, Intermediates (aged 8) and Leavers; and also for special examinations arising during inspection and re-examinations arising from a previous visit. During 1927 the 16 whole-time School Medical Inspectors inspected the following children:- ELEMENTARY Routines Entrants 25076 Intermediates 22637 Leavers 18580 66293 Non-Routines Special Examinations 11921 Re-examinations 10643 22564 Of the above children 17958 (27.0%) routines were discovered to have one or more defects requiring treatment. These children are followed up by the School Nurses and their treatment shewn in a later paragraph. SECONDARY Routines Entrants 3147 Age group 15 1757 4904 Non-routines Special examinations 199 Re-examinations 576 775 Of these 1187 (24.2%) "routines" were referred for treatment. The nine whole-time Dentists (with whom are employed 9 Dental Nurses) inspected 63715 children and 45592 were found to require treatment. Children actually treated numbered 18201. Of these 2158 had been treated at a previous clinic. During the year 15339 teeth were treated by filling, 51545 teeth extracted and other operations (scaling &c.) numbered 2789. The School Oculist (whole time) and 3 School Medical Inspectors devoting one session a week to refraction, issued 2349 prescriptions for glasses, and 1008 prescriptions were received from Hospitals and private practitioners.
