[photograph] Colleagues! This is it what THE GUILD of NURSES has done for YOU [Image] THE GUILD OF NURSES is proud of its achievements in 1938. The outstanding reforms for which we have been responsible include : Revision of salaries of Nursing Staff, by the Middlesex County Council. Adoption of the 96 hour fortnight, by the Middlesex County Council. Adoption of 96 hour fortnight, by the London County Council. (44 out of the 72 Hospitals of the Council have put the scheme into operation.) Principle of 96 hour fortnight adopted by the Essex County Council. Principle of 96 hour fortnight adopted by the Kent County Council. Revision of salaries for all Hospitals and Institutional staffs, in the Newcastle and Gateshead area. In addition the Guild of Nurses has fought individual cases of members including :— Re-instatement of a Sister at West Ham. Re-instatement of a Queen's Nurse. Re-instatement of Sisters and Nurses suspended at High Teams Hospital, Gateshead. Prolonged sick leave with full pay for a Sister. Increase of salary for Male Nurses employed in Mental Units of the London County Council. Abolition of many irksome restrictions in the London County Council and other hospitals services throughout the country. THERE ARE MANY REFORMS THE NURSING PROFESSION STILL DEMANDS:— 1. The revision of salaries for trained nurses. 2. The right of trained staff to become non-resident. 3. A universal application of the 96 hour fortnight. 4. Adequate compensation for permanent disability. 5. A minimum of one month's annual leave for all grades. 6. Local Joint Consultative Committees for each hospital with power to consider such questions as hospital rules, arrangements for annual holidays, questions of physical welfare, dismissal, promotion, discipline or conduct, methods and organisation of work, recreational facilities, leave passes, ratio of patients per nurse on duty by night and day, adequate relief staff, etc. All these reforms have now been recommended by the Inter-Departmental Committee set up by the Ministry of Health and Board of Education. 1939 will bring about many changes in Hospitals and Institutions throughout the Country. Are you prepared for them? Remember! There is no compulsion on the part of Local Authorities to put the Inter-departmental Committee's recommendations into operation. You can help bring about these reforms. How? By joining the Guild of Nurses and demanding, through collective bargaining, their immediate adoption. GUILD OF NURSES, 38, Argyle Square, London, W.C.1.
