The nursing staffs whose salaries are borne on State funds are employed by the War Office, Admiralty, Ministry of Pensions, Board of Control, and the Office of Works, and as welfare workers where there are large staffs of women. MINISTRY OF PENSIONS STAFF. The numbers at present employed by the Ministry of Pensions are as follows: — 1 Matron-in-chief. 30 Matrons. 12 Assistant matrons 220 Charge sisters and 290 Nursing sisters. Apart from this staff, there are a large number of masseuses, some of whom have nursing qualifications also. The masseuses and blind masseurs in the Ministry of Pensions are the best organised staff on the medical side of the Civil Service. They belong to the United Services Massage League, and have done a great deal to improve their own conditions of service through their representatives on the Departmental Whitley Council. Seats are reserved for the Ministry of Pensions Nursing Service on the Masseuses and Nurses Sectional Sub-Committee of the Ministry of Pensions Departmental Whitley Council. The nurses have not so far organised, and consequently have not taken advantage of this method of representing their views. At the request of the staff side of the Whitley Council, the official side has agreed to circulate afresh to the staffs concerned a statement to the effect that all members of the staff, including nurses, should join an appropriate association for the purpose, amongst other things, of representation on the Departmental Whitley Council. QUALIFICATIONS. A candidate for admission to the Ministry Nursing Service must be single or a widow, and must produce the following documents: — (i.) Certificate of registration of birth; or, if this is not obtainable, a declaration made before a magistrate by one of her parents or former guardians giving the date of her birth, (ii.) Certificate of training, (iii.) Medical certificate, (iv.) Dental certificate. PROBATION. Members of the Ministry of Pensions Nursing Service are appointed provisionally for one month. AGREEMENTS. On completion of the period of probation, the nurse, if found satisfactory, is required to sign an agreement to serve for at least six months, such agreement taking effect from the first day of service and being subject to the right of the Ministry to terminate the appointment— 1. On grounds of misconduct or breach of the conditions of the agreement, without notice, or 2. Without cause assigned, by one month's notice in writing
