22 HEALTH AND CLEANLINESS At a later stage some introduction to the germ theory will give further reasons for the removal of dirt. Harmful germs find their food on a dirty body, and more particularly in crevices, where they may remain undisturbed. They increase in numbers, and excrete substances which are poisons to human beings. Further, any injury to a dirty skin permits the wound to become septic; in which state it heals with difficulty, and may spread to such an extent as to endanger life. The material has been left as a "group of lessons" or a large subject topic rather than divided into a number of semi-independent topics. Such a division, where it is necessary, the teacher can best make for himself. In a school where nature study, physiology, and biology are taught, some of the material of this chapter will find a place as a series of corollaries of such lessons, whilst other matter may with advantage be specifically dealt with. Further, it is clear that at no stage of the child's school career may we look upon the topic of personal cleanliness as definitely exhausted, since we are constantly able, as new knowledge accumulates, to learn of further reasons for cleanly habits; and, as new interests present themselves, to discover still further inducements to practise them.
