26 HEALTH AND CLEANLINESS less, it is important that the habits should be formed and practised long before the child has arrived at the age at which he is able to understand the germ theory. Numbers of teachers find it difficult to talk in class to children about the secretions of the nose and mouth, about expectoration, and head parasites. A good deal of tact and care are required if the teacher is to discuss these without evoking considerable repulsion from children in his class — not, unfortunately, against the dirty habits related to these topics, but to the teacher's dealing with them at all — or on the part of parents to whom the children have retailed the subject of the lessons. [Image with caption] ALWAYS WASH BEFORE MEALS. Further, the difficulties in the way of some of the habits which the teacher is trying to inculcate in connection with this section are greater than those connected with the first. Washing facilities of some kind exist in all homes, but not all children are in a position to possess a toothbrush, a brush and comb of their own. There is no reason, however, why they should not be urged to do so, for the cheapness of quite good modern articles makes it possible for children to overcome the difficulties in the way, provided the incentive is sufficiently strong.
