46 HEALTH AND CLEANLINESS ample and vigorous enough to carry on the combustion of vegetable refuse. What has been said in an earlier section about "pretending" applies here, at the earlier stages. At a time when the boy is eager to go into camp and to live the out-of-door life of his heroes, we can interest him in all the details of such a life. He may learn that life in camp is not merely a matter of killing and eating game, but that, for the good of all in the camp, life is bound about with duties relating to cleanliness and sanitation. He learns to compare the precautions taken, on a small scale in the home, and on the larger scale by the borough councils, with what is actually done in camps; and, because of this, thinks well of them and is interested in them. We thus develop in him, at an early stage, a right attitude and a sense of obligation in the matter; the "reason why" coming later, in connection with his studies, and giving to the habits and attitudes he has formed the stamp of intellectual approval.
