CLEANLINESS OUT OF DOORS 61 in furnaces which do not pollute the air with smoke and fumes but conserve the valuable chemical bye-products. All this is part of the general topic of the planning of life and labour in the world of the future in relation to health and cleanliness. At whatever stage of the child's school career we introduce him to the topic of "cleanliness out of doors," we can make him realise that "out of doors" is a place which belongs to everybody. What he does out of doors affects not only himself, but everybody else. Carelessness with litter spoils "out of doors" for everybody. Spitting out of doors is far more dangerous to other people than to the person who spits. An appeal for good manners out of doors is therefore an appeal to the child to behave unselfishly. Many schools arrange picnics and other outdoor excursions, and some participate in summer camps.
