CHARM OF DAINTY APPOINTMENTS It is possible for every girl to be always fresh and dainty in her choice of clothes, for to-day's fashions are simple and hygienic, and can be made at home quite cheaply. In summer every stitch of clothing should be washable, and in winter, when outer clothes are of heavy materials, they need to be brushed and aired after every wearing, and "undies" sent to the tub at least once a week. Fusty clothes are poisonous, to you and to others. Besides, the success of the most careful of toilets is completely ruined if a dirty shoulder-strap or soiled vest edge is seen peeping out. It gives the onlooker a most unpleasant impression! Choose light, loose, and warm "undies" of simple pattern. Three layers are ample. A long vest of wool or wool-and-silk mixtures next the skin is always advisable in our ever-changing climate; hip-band or sports corsets and washable knickers or linings; a one-piece petticoat or camisole and outer knickers constitute the outfit; of warm or cool material according to season and temperature. Not forgetting that the less one wears consistent with comfort the better the skin does its duty. Add or take away from the outside — a woolly coat is very convenient as an extra wrap. Woollies should be washed in lukewarm suds. Any good-class branded soap powder or flakes is suitable. No soda should be used, as this hardens and shrinks the delicate texture. Rinse well in lukewarm water, fold in a towel and press as much water out as you can. Hang out to dry. Every girl can wash her "undies" in her hand-basin and arrange on a tape stretched between two chairs, if there is no garden available. Cotton frocks, hankies, corsets, silken goods and stockings may be squeezed gently foamy suds and treated in the same manner. Hankies that have been used for a cold are best [illustration] 19
