June 17th, 1938 Sir Walter Citrine, Secretary, Trades Union Congress, Transport House, Smith Square, S.W.1 Dear Sir Walter, Further to my interview with Mr. Gillies and Mr. Bolton, on the question of assistance for the wounded trade union members who have been fighting as volunteers with the International Brigade in Spain, I have been trying to compile the information which they desire to have. I find some little difficulty, and before this can be given in full it necessitates extended enquiries. We were informed that approximately 150 Englishmen who had been wounded in Spain were being evacuated via France to England. The first continent of 21 arrived in France along with about 250 men of other countries. Our English wounded came home and we found that special attention was only needed in two cases. The French Government have taken a decision that pending the clearance of the remaining men wounded to their respective countries, they Will not allow any further contingents from Spain. We are making enquiries about the English wounded who are listed for evacuation, but up to the present time we have not received this information. You Will understand that there must be some delay, but as soon as we get the information we will conmunicate with you again. Please let us express our thanks for your kind interest in the matter. Yours sincerely, Charlotte Haldane (Hon. Secretary).
