Description
Summary:034-0134-001 Amalgamated Engineering Union General Office: 110, Peckham Road, London, S.E.15 Our Ref : BG/CRS Youf Ref : WMC/FEM/KMS/36 Secretary's Dept. FRED A. SMITH: General Secretary, to whom all Communications should be addressed. Telephone: Brixworth 268 (3 lines) Telegraphic Address: "Edifying, Pitsford" Sir Walter Citrine, Trades Union Congress General Council, Transport House, Smith Square, LONDON. S.W.1. 4th October 1938 Dear Sir Walter, re: International Brigade. My Executive Council have this day considered your letter of the 21st inst., addressed to Mr. F.A. Smith, wherein you set out the details surrounding the death of Mr. Bruce Boswell, 56 Westcotes, Coventry, an apprentice member of this Union. The Executive Council were deeply grieved to hear of the tragic circumstances, but they think - knowing the constitution of this Union as you do - that you will appreciate the position in which they are placed, that is, of not being able to assist in a case like this. Our Rules and constitution are very rigid indeed, in fact, they are probably the most rigid of any Trade Union in the country, and a departure therefrom would render it possible for any member who felt aggrieved to refer the point to the Final Appeal Court of the Union. If anything could be done in the way of an appeal to the International Solidarity Fund, my Executive Council would be only too pleased to co-operate. Yours sincerely, Ben Gardner ASSISTANT GENERAL SECRETARY. 292/946/34/134
