Dear Sir Walter, I was hopeful that with the help you gave us in October and subscriptions from the public, we would be able to carry on the work of the above Unit till the end of the year. I thought that then we might reasonably claim to have done our bit and wind up. Our income was about £1,000 short of our expenditure but I agreed to make up the difference myself. Miss Jacobsen came home however for a few days at Christmas to urge the Committee to carry on for at least three or four months longer in view of the desperate state of the non-combatants in and around Madrid, as explained in the enclosed letter to the press, of which I sent you a copy on 14th. The Committee consented and she hoped to see you when passing through London on her way back and secure your further support but unfortunately was disappointed. A letter received yesterday enclosing 45/- from a number of men in a Greenock Workshop suggests my getting into touch with Shop Stewards, but I think I first wrote to you because I was told by some of them that funds for such purposes were contributed to you for distribution among suitable schemes. Bailie Elger and Ex-Treasurer Dollan here both advised dealing with you direct rather than with individual Works. The work cost us an average of nearly £800 a month till November. Subscriptions have fallen off terribly since mainly I think owing to public benevolence having been diverted to China. To recall the Unit in the present state of matters in and around Madrid seems unthinkable but there is no help for it if we do not get substantial assistance. The very thought of it at the end of the year brought me letters and telegrams from the Chiefs of the Government in Barcelona full of gratitude and urging us not to think of abandoning them.
